A football fan who died after a fall at an international match has been named.

Nathan McSeveney (22) from Cumnock in east Ayrshire, was taken to hospital after falling in a stairwell at Glasgow's Celtic Park following the European Championship qualifier between Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Exit 33 of the ground last night and he was taken to the city’s Royal Infirmary but later died, said police.

“Relatives have been informed and the Health and Safety Executive have been made aware. There are no suspicious circumstances,” said a spokesman.

Scottish joy over their gripping 1-0 Group D home victory over Ireland was tempered by the news of the fan’s death.

“One of our young fans died last night after falling through a stairwell coming out of Celtic Park. I’m so sorry for his family. Tragic news,” tweeted Scottish Football Association chief executive Stewart Regan.

Scotland are due to host England in a friendly on Tuesday.
