MY HOLIDAYS

Your earliest holiday memory?

My earliest holiday memory is of Mother taking myself and my sisters to a caravan in Tramore, in Co Waterford, for the whole month of August in the 1950s. The racing was on for one of the weeks. My dad would come down there, and we'd have visits from extended family. Cousins of mine would all go down. They were great days.

The worst holiday was the year I went to the Hong Kong races with the lads with my jaws wired. I had broken my jaw, but I didn't want to miss the trip. I couldn't eat anything at all, and Helen [ my wife] gave a pliers to the fella sharing my room, in case I got sick in the bed and he had to cut the wires.

I don't think it was much of a holiday for him, either. He probably didn't sleep, worrying about me being sick.

Your best holiday?

We had some great holidays when the kids were young. There isn't one favourite in particular. I remember going skiing for two weeks in Wengen, in Austria. I also remember going to Walt Disney World in Florida when the children were small. We all loved it, Katie, Ruby, Ted, Helen and myself.

If budget or work was no restriction, what would be your dream holiday?

I'd like to go somewhere I haven't been; maybe Australia or New Zealand - somewhere different.

If you had your pick, who would you bring on holiday with you?

I'd bring Helen, my wife, no doubt. It's okay to be on holiday for a week with other people, but I don't know of anyone else I could be compatible with for more than a week.

Your favourite place in Ireland?

I like west Cork, down around Inchydoney. I also like Kenmare, in Co Kerry, all that area. There's good food, nice scenery and nice places to go, and we always meet people to talk to.

What book would you recommend to read on holiday?

I wouldn't read a book at all. I like to be able to get the Racing Post and the Irish Field, and if I can I get The Irish Times and the Cork Examiner. I'm not a book person at all, but I like to keep up with the news.

Where will you spend your next holiday?

Helen and myself are going to Savannah, Georgia.
