LAST MONTH, in a countdown of the 100 best toys ever, Channel 4 viewers voted Lego as their number one.

It’s not surprising, as the toy has so many applications – one of which is on show today in the Radisson Hotel, Galway. Twenty-five teams of students will compete for the First Lego League Robotics Challenge and the public is welcome to come and see their ingenious ideas in action and visit other science-related stands and displays, such as the sumo wrestling robots at the Irish Robots Stand. Entry is free, 10.30am-4.30pm.

To really see what can be done with Lego and have a brilliant day , or better still, two days out, visit Legoland at Windsor, just outside London. Worth considering for those planning a mid-term or Easter break with small children.

Just about everything in the theme park is made of Lego – the rides, mini villages, even the little squirrels in the trees as you speed by on the Lego train. There are live performances throughout the day and everything is age-specific, so even very small children have plenty of activities to choose from. It’s worth opting for a two-day ticket as there really is so much to do in the massive amusement park. The only downside for those familiar with the everything-on-site Disneylands is that the nearest hotels tend to be a drive away from the park so plan accordingly.
