Hiiker: a free Irish app to guide you on the best walking and hiking routes around the country

There is a paid version, but the most useful part of this app is available free: offline maps

This Irish-developed app is just what you need to get out and about around the country this summer. It offers up a list of trusted walking and hiking routes, guiding you around Ireland to some of the most beautiful routes you can walk. Each route is ranked according to difficulty, and you can filter them by duration, elevation or even by tags such as family friendly or historic sites. Whether it’s an easy lake walk in Wicklow you are after or a more challenging Carrauntoohil hike, you can find something to suit your needs. You can also go farther afield, with some trails in the UK, US, New Zealand, France and the Netherlands included too.

You can also use the app to record your hikes and share them with the Hiiker community; these trails can be found under the “Community hikes” tab.

A pro version of the app brings extra features but the most useful part of this app is available free of charge: offline maps. That is particularly useful if you are attempting a remote route, where mobile data connections are likely to drop out.
