UNITE, THE union, outlined its proposals yesterday regarding cost-cutting measures to management at the Munster Expressover 11 redundancies at one of the country's oldest regional newspapers.
The redundancies sought relate in the main to printing, which is expected to be outsourced. Eight positions in production and printing could be affected, along with two in distribution and one in advertising.
The Munster Expresscelebrated its 150th anniversary last year.
Although it is one of the biggest selling regional papers in the southeast, declines in both advertising revenue and circulation are understood to have resulted in the sought redundancies.
On local radio station WLR FM yesterday, regional officer with Unite Brendan Byrne said the union will meet with management again next week.
Mr Byrne said the union believes “alternatives” to cuts are possible. He said the company has gone to consider the proposals regarding the measures, while management “stated they will follow procedures”.
