A €3 million grant to prevent coastal erosion nationwide is to be announced by the Department of the Marine for this year.

Waterford Labour TD Brian O'Shea warned yesterday that Ireland's coast was in danger from erosion due to global warming.

The Department of the Marine requires a 25 per cent contribution from coastal counties for work to protect against erosion. However, some counties with a low commercial rate such as Waterford cannot meet the cost, according to Mr O'Shea.

Cunnigar and Bonmahon in Co Waterford received €75,000 and €30,000 respectively for the design of protection schemes last year. Some €1.54 million was allocated to Waterford County Council in 2004-2005 for protection work in Tramore, Cunnigar, Ballyvoile and Helvick.
