Take me down to the River Boyne

The annual rock festival at Slane Castle has had its ups and downs

The annual rock festival at Slane Castle has had its ups and downs. This year's line-up of Bryan Adams, Moby and Macy Gray has us critics bemoaning the decline of the once-great festival, but there's no doubt that this unlikely triumvirate of headliners is a sure-fire crowd pleaser. Macy Gray's outfit will probably be louder than her throaty voice, but she's sure to get the crowd singing along to her big 1999 hit, I Try. Moby's music has become so ubiquitous via TV adverts and movie soundtracks, the crowd will already know every beat of his current album, Play. Bryan Adams may be a grizzly old rocker, but at least he has a large enough repertoire to keep the young and old kids rocking by the banks of the Boyne. The Canadian star has also cleverly kept up with changing trends. Oh, and then there's Summer Of '69 - for everyone to loudly share in the collective musical memory. The supporting bill includes Radiohead soundalikes Muse, soft-rocker Eagle Eye Cherry, and Irish acts Dara and The Screaming Orphans. Tickets at £36.50 are still available. (01-4569569).
