A 44-year-old Co Wexford man was last night "serious but stable" in Waterford Regional Hospital after he was stabbed during an incident in New Ross.

Named locally as Nicholas Drohan of JKL Place in New Ross, he is believed to have been stabbed on North Street at about 10 pm on Sunday, gardaí said.

Gardaí sealed off the area on Sunday night pending a technical examination, which concluded yesterday.

It is understood gardaí are following a definite line of inquiry into the attack, and a number of individuals have so far been interviewed.
