A 32-year-old man was killed yesterday when his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a four-wheel drive vehicle in Co Kilkenny.

The man, whose name was not released yesterday pending formal identification, died after the crash on the N25 at Lisnakill Cross, near Glenmore, shortly before 8am.

His orange and purple motorcycle, believed to have been a 900cc Kawasaki, was in collision with a navy-coloured vehicle, gardaí said.

Emergency services attended at the scene, and the man was taken by ambulance to Waterford Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man, a Polish national, had been travelling from Waterford to New Ross, while the driver of the other vehicle was understood to have been commuting to work in Waterford from Mullinavat.

This man, said locally to be in his 50s and living in south Kilkenny, was also taken to Waterford Regional Hospital. He was reported to be "suffering from shock but recovering".

A section of the N25 Waterford to New Ross road was closed following the incident to enable gardaí to carry out a technical examination. Traffic diversions were in place until last night.

Gardaí in Waterford appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Sgt Larry Langton said they were in the process of trying to formally identify the dead man through his friends.

"There were a number of trucks in the area at the time," he said. "One truck was coming from New Ross, and we are looking to speak to that driver."

It is understood this particular driver stopped traffic following the incident.

Sgt Langton said gardaí also wanted the driver of another truck, who was driving in the direction of New Ross, to contact them.

"We are looking to speak to those drivers and any eyewitnesses that travelled that road this morning."

Witnesses are asked to contact Waterford gardaí on 051-305300.

Meanwhile, a person was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital following a collision in Mooncoin, Co Kilkenny, yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí said a woman suffered minor injuries after a "three-tonne truck" was involved in a collision with a car at Ballymountain shortly after 2pm.
