A man being questioned by gardaí in connection with a party in Waterford where a 23-year-old man died on Saturday was yesterday released without charge.
Two men were arrested following the party where Stephen Carberry Cherrymount, Waterford, died from causes that are not yet known. A Fás student, he had spent Friday night and Saturday at the house.
It is understood that two other men, who were in the house at Shortcourse at the time, contacted the emergency services when they could not wake Mr Carberry at about 7pm on Saturday.
A postmortem by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis at Waterford Regional Hospital on Sunday revealed that he did not die as a result of violence.
Two men, believed to be in their 30s, were arrested and detained at Waterford Garda station for questioning on Sunday. One was released on Sunday while the other was held until yesterday afternoon before being released.
The men were being questioned about another matter at the house, according to Sgt Larry Langton, and a file is being prepared for the DPP. He said yesterday they were treating the incident as a "sudden death".
"There is nothing conclusive in the postmortem results and the toxicology report could take up to 48 days," added Sgt Langton.
Mr Carberry's death brings to four the number of young people who have died in the city in three weeks following weekend parties. Joseph Cummins (21), The Willows, Cairnwood, Tramore, died after he was stabbed in an incident at a rented property at Lower Grange Road on November 24th. Hours later, John Grey (23), Ballybeg Square, and Kevin Doyle (21) Viewmount, collapsed after swallowing cocaine and possibly "speed" at a party in Mr Grey's family home. They have since died. Many people in the area, largely populated with elderly people, said they had only learned of the incident when gardaí carried out door-to-door inquiries on Saturday night.
