Man charged with rape of girl in Waterford

A man has been charged in connection with the alleged rape of a minor in Waterford on Monday morning last.

A man has been charged in connection with the alleged rape of a minor in Waterford on Monday morning last.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was remanded in custody at a special sitting of the Waterford District Court yesterday morning.

He was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at 2.30pm on Saturday. The man was again questioned yesterday morning and was arrested at 10am following his release.

The 14-year-old girl reported the alleged rape at 12.45am on Monday last after arriving home from Tramore by bus with a friend. The alleged attack happened on the walkway linking John's River to the Cherrymount housing estate in Waterford City.

She received medical treatment and gave evidence to gardaí in Waterford.

Gardaí in Waterford carried out door-to-door inquiries and appealed to members of the public who had travelled on the 11.35pm bus from Tramore on Sunday evening to come forward to help them with their inquiries.

The man is due to appear at Waterford District Court on Friday.
