Garda appeal on Waterford stabbing murder

Gardaí in Waterford have appealed for anyone with information regarding the murder of a 21-year-old man in the city over the weekend to come forward.

Joseph Cummins, The Willows, Cairnwood, Tramore, died after he was stabbed in an incident at a rented property in the city at Lower Grange Road.

A man in his 30s, believed to be from Clonmel, was held for questioning for nearly 24 hours up to late Sunday night.

He was released from Waterford Garda station without charge at about 11.20pm in accordance with Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

A file is being prepared for the DPP.

A grandnephew of former lord mayor Stephen Rodgers, Mr Cummins was taken to Waterford Regional Hospital at about 4.20pm on Saturday and was pronounced dead shortly after 5pm.

A postmortem revealed he died from his stab wounds. It is understood that others were at the house when Mr Cummins was stabbed.

The neighbouring house was inspected by a Garda search unit on Sunday.

Drainpipes, bins and drains in the area were searched.

It is understood that the search unit was seeking a weapon used in the attack.

Mr Cummins had been living in Tramore with his family for some years.

Garda Supt Dave Sheahan last night appealed for anyone who was on the Lower Grange Road and the surrounding areas between 3pm and 5pm and who noticed anything suspicious, to come forward.

"People may have been out at soccer matches; they may have been up at the Butler Centre or they may have been going into town or travelling along the Ring Road," said Supt Sheahan.

"They may have seen someone walking or running in the area or anything unusual."
