Man in court over alleged assault on teenager in Co Longford

Male in critical condition at Mullingar hospital following incident in Ballymahon

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged assault in Ballymahon, Co Longford in the early hours of Saturday which left a teenager seriously injured.

Sean McCormack (19), of Rath Reagh, Smithfield, Legan, Co Longford, was brought before a special sitting of Longford District Court on Sunday.

He was arrested on Saturday after a man in his late teens sustained serious head injuries following an alleged incident along Ballymahon’s Main Street.

The injured man was being treated at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, where his condition was described as critical.

Det Garda Damien McGovern gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution during the brief hearing before Judge Alan Mitchell. He said Mr McCormack made no reply.

Insp Yvonne Martin said the State would not be objecting to bail once a number of conditions were attached including that the accused must sign on weekly at Longford Garda station and refrain from contacting the injured man either directly or indirectly.

Mr McCormack was also ordered to avoid posting any details relating to either the incident or the alleged injured party on social media.

He was likewise told to remain free from alcohol and controlled drugs, to reside at his home address and to surrender his passport within 24 hours.

Judge Mitchell remanded Mr McCormack on bail to January 11th.
